The Dictionary Game turns the dictionary inside out. Instead of looking a word up, you are shown its definition and have five attempts to work out which word it describes. Every guess colours in: green for a letter in the right place, yellow for a letter in the wrong place, red for a letter that is not in the answer. It takes about three minutes a day, and it teaches vocabulary the way vocabulary actually sticks — by retrieval rather than rote reading.
Five word-length levels
Short — 3 to 4 letter words, ideal for children and quick play.Compact — 5 to 7 letters, everyday English vocabulary.Moderate — 8 to 10 letters for confident players.Lengthy — 11 to 13 letters, advanced vocabulary and exam-level words.Extended — 14 to 16 letters, the expert tier for word lovers.

Alongside the main puzzle we feature a rare, archaic or forgotten English word each day, with its meaning, its origin and a page of its own so you can come back to it later. Past words live in the Word of the Day archive .
